User Reviews about Garmin nüMaps Lifetime North America Map Updates
I read several reviews stating that the Garmin update would take ~2-3 hours and was prepared to let the update run overnight. Those individuals must have a really fast internet connection. I have basic DSL and it took NINE hours to update. This time did not take into account the 3 or 4 times the connection either closed (from the Garmin side) or dropped (from my DSL provider) - I'm not sure which one was the culprit. There is an option that allows launching of software installation after download completes. I had the box checked for this piece. Unfortunately, the updater did not register the checkmark and would not move forward without my authorizing the installation to continue. Hence, when viewed from this perspective, the update is not as automatic as it could be.
Once this hurdle was cleared, the installation onto my Nuvi 650 was easy. Thereafter, I tried to look up a place I would be going to this weekend. The Garmin was still unable to find this place of business even though the company has been in existence for many years and is widely known. Unfortunately, there was no success. I'm not sure what was updated, but I am guessing as I travel around, I will see changes that were not there before.
One caveat - if you are used to certain voices navigating you to your destination, BEWARE: They may have been deleted. I use the British English voice, Daniel, to get me around. With the update, Daniel was gone. I am not a fan of a British woman (instead) yelling at me that I've gone the wrong way. I had to call Garmin up for retrieval. You can retrieve this old voice and access new voices with their "Web Updater" that downloads map updates. It would have been nice to be forewarned of these changes. The perception is that only the MAPS are updated.
All in all, this investment will be a good one. I do not expect my GPS to be dying any time soon, and over time, the cost will pay itself off quite nicely. -- The overnight (and then some) update
This is a great product and it is a real bargain compared to the price on the Garmin website. The only problem is that installation takes forever. I started installing at 9 am and it did not finish until 11:30 am. Also there are no directions what so ever so you pretty much have to fly by the seat of your pants when installing the updates. -- Great Product Poor Downloading
If you want a lifetime gps map updater for your garmin, then this is what you want. This will allow you to update your product (make sure it is listed for this card) 3 or 4 times per year each year for one price. It's a little steep, but it pays for itself shortly. Just plug in the numbers on the website, and the prompts will guide you through the rest. -- GPS updater
The card shipped quickly and was received in a couple of days. I went to the Garmin site and entered the scratch off number from the back of the card and was immediately credited with a lifetime map subscription. Installation was straightforward from there.
The entire process was simple, efficient and completely satisfactory. -- Garmin Lifetime Map Subscription
it is awesome for the money but it took forever to download the update. almost 12 hours. very slow but worth it. start it over night and just leave it is my suggestion -- great map update
